In case the Pan Am Games and the multitude of street and cultural festivals in Toronto weren’t keeping you busy enough this summer, may I suggest one more excellent way to spend your time in this city? The Open Roof Festival presents first run indie movies under the stars every Wednesday (including Canada Day) until August 19th. This isn’t your typical bring a blanket outdoor movie event though. Each evening includes a unique menu from Aura by Cashew & Clive, often inspired by the movie you’ll be seeing. The space at 99 Sudbury is also fully licensed so you can enjoy drinks from Amsterdam Brewery to go along with your snacks and film. You can leave the blanket at home, unless you need to cover up on a chilly evening, because chairs are set up in front the screen for you. The whole evening kicks off with a cool, usually local, band around 8pm – so you get a movie and a show! Did I mention tickets are only $15? I love this festival!
While you really can’t go wrong with anything on the schedule, I’m especially looking forward to:
- August 5th with Heavyweights Brass Band opening for While We’re Young, a comedy with Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried
- August 19th for the Toronto-set Diamond Tongues, which features Leah Fay of July Talk fame, who will be doing double duty as the evening’s musical guest as well
A little tip from my experience last year, if you bring your Open Roof wristband to one of several bars in the area after the show you get a free pint of Amsterdam beer (but don’t dawdle, quantities are limited!). Look inside your wristband for details about which bars are offering the promotion this year.
What’s your favourite under the stars movie festival in Toronto?
