Toronto has seen a boom in luxury hotels in recent years, with the likes of the Ritz, Trump and Shangri-la hotels joining existing five star accommodations. With luxury hotels, come new luxury spas to entice locals and tourists alike. Located at 188 University Avenue, the 5th floor of the Shangri-la Hotel contains a 9,000 square foot health club with pool, jacuzzi and infared sauna ($20 access fee if you are not staying at the hotel) and the Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris.
Having previously visited the Shangri-la’s lounge for dessert and cocktails, I was excited to see a bit more. The spa area is very serene and has some lovely city views. Tea, baklava and grapes are a nice touch while you wait in the lounge which is full of pillows and comfy rest areas. The overall theme definitely has an Arabian nights quality. Both my treatments – a 45 minute massage and a 60 minute pedicure – were outstanding! The staff definitely know what they are doing here. However, I was a little disappointed by the lack of facilities. The sauna, pool and jacuzzi can only be accessed by purchasing the $20 health club add on, and both the change rooms and lounge were fairly small. Considering that the Ritz has a similar price point for treatments, their facilities are much larger and better equipped.
Had I arrived earlier, I would have added a 15 minute visit to the Hammam steam chamber in advance of my treatment for $25, which may have made up for the lack of water facilities. Overall I would still recommend the Miraj Hammam Spa, primarily because the staff are excellent and the treatments really hit the spot! Even better, there is currently a TravelZoo special for $145 (plus $45 on arrival for tax and tip), which includes a massage and pedicure. Remember one of my key travel tips is to always check out group discount sites like Travel Zoo, Group On, and Wag Jag to find deals on spas, restaurants, hotels and activities in your destination city!
