Weekly Photo Challenge: Express Yourself

The Mission District in San Francisco is one of my favourite neighbourhoods.  The many murals painted on walls, fences and garages by Latino artists beginning in the 1970’s bring street art and self-expression to life here.  A stroll down Balmy Alley reveals beautifully colourful works that make statements about gentrification, resistance, the AIDS epidemic, the environment, colonialism and much more.  Below are a few of my favourites, taken April 2014.

a mural of police officers arresting 2 young latinos

a colourful mural of latinos working in the fields and some women holding up photographs of their adult children

a mural of a large black face crying with "we remember" and "HIV" written on the side

a collage with blue skies on top and a garbage dump on the bottom with various items in it

See how others are expressing themselves here.
