First taste of Bar Fancy

Tucked off the side of an alleyway down Queen Street West, west of Ossington, you fill find Bar Fancy. Look for the neon tiger to lead your way down to the long awaited snack bar from Jonathon Poon, chef at the acclaimed Chantecler in Parkdale, and Jesse Fader, former chef at Fabbrica.

From the streetfront window full of plants, you might not even notice the cozy casual bar within. I have to admit, even with the gold-plating, which apparently makes the place impossible to miss, I walked by it twice without noticing.

Inside the exposed brick wall interior, you find a small menu of tasty snacks. If you arrive between 5 and 7pm, you will get the added bonus of $2 pieces of exceptionally juicy fried chicken and oysters at $7.50 per half dozen.  At other times, the menu is average price for this area (see below).

A selection of about 6-7 beers ranges from $6 for a Muskoka Detour to $14 for a Beau’s Kissmeyer. A decent wine list is available at $11 by the glass. No desserts yet but the menu is likely to change and hopefully will expand.

The vibe here is dark, cool and casual, which is welcome on this stretch of Queen West. And don’t forget…the kitchen is open until 2AM, when I am sure the fried chicken tastes even better.
